The Hockeymask 50 Years Anniversary 1959-2009 - Davidson Edition - Henrik Lundqvist, New York Rangers, NHL, 2009-2010
David Gunnarsson got the assignment by the New York Rangers to create this tribute painting to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the goalie mask. The mask was to be used by Henrik Lundqvist in the anniversary game on the 1st of November 2009 in Madison Square Garden. It was a magic feeling and a big honor for David Gunnarsson to get the assignment to create this unique anniversary mask. Because what would the hockey be without the goalie mask, this fantastic invention by Jaques Plante.
It was back in 1959 that Jaques Plante introduced the first goalie mask, in a game in Madison Square Garden. The New York Rangers team gave David a brief description of how they wanted the design, and then David put together a complete design. The Rangers gave thumbs up and David picked up the airbrush gun and started the action.
One side of the mask was painted as an old school mask, the Rangers keeper John Davidson's classic Rangers mask. It's a complete copy of Davidson wearing his mask, with hair and ear and everything...
The other side of the mask was painted as a tribute to Jaques Plante. In the starry sky above the NY skyline you see the first goalie mask ever, and down below the anniversary years 1959-2009 was painted, naturally with Rangers script letters. David also freehand painted a portrait of Jaques in blue tints. THE design is framed by typical Rangers lines. And on the chin you see the original ticket from that special game back in 1959.
Just as usual when David Gunnarsson is in action the design was created with a detail work beyond the normal. Using the airbrush gun(s) he created 3-D effects and cool metallic tints, with the DAVEART Holographix FX with Rangers look as the finishing touch that makes it all perfect.
