Pure Rage - Peter Budaj, Colorado Avalanche, NHL, 2008-2009
The story
The NHL star Peter Budaj contacted David Gunnarsson in the summer of 2007. He had seen David's art and wanted him to create his new mask look. David's design ”Altair” was a great success in NHL, so when it was time for a new mask design Peter knew right away where to go... Here you can see the result!
Peter wanted a theme with the Hulk! The beast with unbelieavable power! David thought out some ideas that Peter liked, and started to create.
The Hulk, in red version, on one side breaks out of the mask with full power, 3D effects to the max.
On the other side he goes to attack, ready to punch. Maximum action! Zoomed-in details with the eye and also the silhouette in the background give a feeling of depth in the whole.
With smart choice of colours the effects are reinforced. On one side the base goes in gray, while the other side goes in red, which gives a cool effect when the mask is turned from side to side.
Action is the key word for this design.
The Colorado logos breaks off nicely and create a graphic of the whole. David painted the logotypes with 3D and metallic style, to make it look like they are attached onto the mask.
Lots of cool patterns are painted into the layers of metallic, cool patterns appearing differently in different angles that add an extra dimension and a fantastic depth to the whole. Details and details, as always in David's paintings.
On the chin the number rules, in concrete, perfect for the theme.
On the backplate a certain dude shows up, just like on Peter's previous mask created by David...
