Darth Gerbs - Martin Gerber, Ottawa Senators, NHL, 2008-2009

The story

It was much fun for David to create this design. Last season Martin Gerber mostly played in a black mask, and because of this he got the nickname Darth Vader! So the theme for his new mask was obvious...

David got the assignment to realize this design vision, and he did it with very carefully planned detail solutions. Every line and color shifting is carefully calculated to give maximum effect to the whole.

It was a very big challenge to paint Vader's angular mask on a hockey mask with a completely different shape. David painted glitter in the mask inspired by Vader's helmet. All this together strengthens the design.

On each side there is a graphic with Ottawa's logo in black and white tints.

To bring out the design David weaved in a red border, in perfect harmony with Ottawa's red jersey. This gives a perfect profile to the mask and marks the Vader helmet. And the red also reminds about a laser sword in its glow, and we all know Vader likes laser swords...

To get even more depth David weaved in a glistening starry sky in the black behind the red glow.

The design immediately became a big success in the team and among the fans. When Martin started using the mask it got on the first page of Ottawa Sun, and was given attention in media all over the world.
