Detroit Rock City OctoAction - Daniel Larsson, Detroit Red Wings, NHL, 2008-2009
The story
Here we have a design really breathing Detroit to a 100%! Octopusses are a real Detroit thing, every playoffs the fans throw in octopusses on the ice. David and Daniel talked about this and decided to use it on Daniel's new mask.
David painted an aggressively cool purple octopus big on one side, maxxed with 3D and depth. His tentacles go everywhere on the mask, and if you look more close you see it must be a goalie-octopus, since he's holding both stick and an old school mask. And check out that mask, it's custom-made for an octopus with its big head... Details and details, as always in David's paintings...
Thanks to the fact that the design has different design solutions on each side, a cool asymmetric look is achieved when the mask is seen from the front.
On the other side the goalie-octopus takes a grip on the Detroit logo, really cool!
The base colour on a design like this is of course Detroit's typical dark red tone. And lots of cool shining air bubbles, since we are under water.
Around the octopus David has added a strong white outline to make the octopus pop out and make the design extremely distinct, which always is important. All tints are also glittering in hot metallic, that gives an extra deptra depth to the whole.
On the chin Daniel's initials rule, written in the same style as in the old Detroit logo... Everything is thought about...!
The white cage makes itself perfect in this design and becomes an important part of the design.
